I'd do it for you, but I don't have access > to a BSD box at the moment. > > sorry to butt in, but i had this problem a couple of days ago. i have 7.1-RELEASE and had added setenv PACKAGEROOT ftp://ftp.fr.freebsd.org/ to .cshrc to use a closer site but had forgotten the ending / i don't remember this happening in 71-prerelease, so was wondering if he had changed settings somewhere.
