A mixed bag, as always - some cards now work while support for >others that used to work is now broken. A driver is only as good as the effort put into it. If no one cares about it and it just gets casually patched, it will never be any good. The if_ed driver, which handles much bigger monsters (and many more varients) than the DEC chip, was always kept in order from release to release.......if you prefer the Intel boards (Now) thats cool, but lets not blame the hardware. Its a software thing. but when you start telling people that if they want to upgrade their OS they'll have to throw out their 35 or 50 dec boards (that you previously recommended), you give FreeBSD a black eye.
