I don't fully understand the internals, however, and would love to hear from someone who does ... As for "scandisk", the Unix equivalent is fsck, and it's normally only necessary when the system was shut down improperly (as happens to me frequently, because I really shouldn't be running two space heaters and five computers on the same circuit =). In such a case, fsck will run on bootup before the filesystems are mounted.
