Well, in answer to the questions about he Novatel Merlin, I can now answer firsthand. It works wih FreeBSD. Mine just came today, and I'm writing this through it. It works with user PPP just fine (after disabling vjcomp). This is brief because it's a bit tough to type in emacs with the lag (about 500ms).
