What happened is fsck (I think that's what did this) marked some files - including /etc/ttys (causing the login problem) and /etc/hosts - character devices. I luckily had the 2.0.5-release CD lying around, so I replaced all of the messed up files I could find, and the system is back to normal. Thinking back a to a couple months ago, I remember when a friend of mine tried FreeBSD he had a sort of similar problem after a system crash, and never could get the system back to normal. Perhaps it is a problem with fsck? Rob
