I have the same setup here. Running FreeBSD 2.1.5 with Portmasters
among other demonic components... :)

You might want to look into Radius for authentication, especially if your 
user table gets to be around 200 or more. Radius runs on your FreeBSD 
server and uses udp ports for authentication. You can check out more info 
on it at Livingston's web site.

If you want, you can set it up to user the /etc/passwd file, or in this 
case, the /etc/master.passwd file for verification, but you still will 
have to add the usernames to the radius users file.

A lot better than user tables. Never bothered to read up on the in.pmd 
daemon though.
