HELP!! I'm certain I've missed something here, but have reviewed the
documentation and tried different approaches for three days and
its bigger than I am! Any help or additional documentation you can
offer will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Here's a description
of the process and error messages:
1. Downloaded from FTP site "\pub\FreeBSD\2.1.5-Release\bin" and
"\pub\FreeBSD\2.1.5-Release\doc" and
"\pub\FreeBSD\2.1.5-Release\floppies" files and formatted and
copied them to 13 floppies at 1.44MB each, six files per diskette.
Disk directories are shown below.
(NOTE: I also tried 2.1.6-Release before this.)
2. Ran RAWRITE BOOT4.FLP to create boot diskette and booted PC to
"Welcome to FreeBSD!" menu. I've tried Novice, Express, and Custom
installations without success. Selected Custom\Partition menu and
saw 2051000 unused blocks (1.x GB SCSI disk w\Adaptec 1542
controller). Pressed "A" to Use Entire Disk and "Y" to make the
partition cooperative with future operating systems. Pressed "Q"
and selected Standard\No Boot Manager option.
(NOTE: BOOT.FLP continually re-booted the machine, even though it
has 16MB of memory.)
3. Selected Label and Pressed "A" for Auto Defaults for All and pressed
"Q" to exit.
4. Selected Distributions to Extract and #4 User Binaries and Doc only.
Accepted default "Y" at menu to install DES Cryptographic software.
I didn't select\mark any of the encryption services and pressed
ENTER for OK to get back to the Custom Install Options menu.
5. Selected the Choose Install Media and selected 4\Floppy disk set.
6. Selected Commit\Perform pending partition\label\extract actions. A
warning appeared and I pressed ENTER. Saw several info boxes about
installation in progress including "Doing newfs -b 8192 -f...".
Note that the boot floppy is still in the disk drive at this time.
7. Got prompt to "Please insert next floppy into drive unit A" and I
put in the floppy that contained a:\bin\bin.aa, a:\bin\bin.bb
through a:\bin\bin.ac through a:\bin\bin.ef (six files). Message
said "starting holographic..." and then the error message as
follows:
Couldn't extract the following distributions. This
may be because they were not available on the
installation media you've chosen:
bin doc manpages dict
When I pressed ENTER to continue I got the following message:
Can't find kernel image to link to on the root file
system!. You're going to have a hard time getting
this system to boot from the hard disk, I'm afraid!
When I pressed ENTER to continue I got the following message:
Installation complete with some errors. You may wish
to scroll through the debugging messages on VTY1 with
the scroll-lock feature.
When I pressed ENTER to continue I got the following message:
The commit operation completed with errors. Not
updating \etc files.
The screen returned to the Choose Custom Installation Options menu.
