Odd. I know that the handbook at one time recommended "make build" and
"make install" to build and install a port. In my fairly recent stable
I still see it documented in /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk.

But I can't argue with the bottom line,although I usually prefer to do
a "make" (identical to "make build") first and then "make install
clean".
