This can be done with a combination of qmail's pop3d and tcpserver,
utilizing a separate password database for each virtual host.  Jos Backus
has an implementation that works quite well, if you're willing to switch to
qmail (http://home.plex.nl/~jbackus/).

Baed on your first request, I'd suggest looking at qmail.  See
