There's an O'reilly book called something like "Managing networks with Cisco
Routers" that's an excellent intro, even for non-cisco routers.  Has some
reference material that's useful, too.

As far as hard references go, there are several books by W. Richard Stevens
which might be of help -- TCP/IP Illustrated, Unix Network Programming, both
titles have a few volumes per title.
