Bottom line is dri is not usable on this system with mesa-17.3.8.

Sandybridge graphics. FreeBSD 11.1-Stable r331492 on ThinkPad T520.
No DRI. Firefox shows:
WebGL 1 Driver Renderer VMware, Inc. -- llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 256 bits)

glxgears:
