i added the pc_enable flag and the apm flag when i rebuilt the kernel,
which i have done several times since i first intalled FreeBSD,
almost entirely successfully (except for this problem 8-))

i have a pcmcia card in a Dell Latitude laptop,
and the startup file (/etc/rc.pccard)
complained that the two programs mentioned could not be found -
i searched the disk and could not find them
        /usr/sbin/pccardc
        /usr/sbin/pccardd

with or without the card in the slot
