It sounds as if the font is being clipped.

Changing the line-spacing may help.

man xterm -

       scaleHeight (class ScaleHeight)
               Scale line-height values by the resource value, which is
               limited to =E2=80=9C0.9=E2=80=9D to =E2=80=9C1.5=E2=80=9D.  =
The default value is =E2=80=9C1.0=E2=80=9D,
