For testing purposes, I set up two identical disk slices, and mirrored them with ccd. Whne I turned off the external drive, copies to the ccd device failed as expected, but I was able to unlink existing files. When I brought the external drive back on line, fsck found the unlinked files, and dutifully placed them in lost+found.
