I once had that problem with Gnome 2.4. The guilty application was in my
case Galeon, which hung (due to a programming error) and both consumed
100% CPU and blocked the logout process.

So, you might want to run `top' on the console if you encounter the
problem again. Perhaps you can spot the trouble-maker that way.
