You should look at the "sup" information in the handbook. Sup is what most people use to keep current on the mirror. The startup is expen- sive, because you have do download so many files individually, but it gets fast later, when you only have to update a few files. That, I think, is the process, and you just need the disk space to keep up with FreeBSD and you're all set. -John P.S.
