It has been worse than pulling teeth from a rattle snake, (and also had
to take some abuse from DES on IRC (yeah, what's new)).

According to Brian Feldman, here is an example of what this is all about:

    $ cvs -R -d opensource:/home/freebsd/ncvs co -rRELENG_4_3_0_RELEASE src/UPDATINGcvs server: warning: cannot open
    cvs server: warning: cannot open /home/freebsd/ncvs/CVSROOT/val-tags read/write: Permission deniedcvs [server aborted]: cannot read /home/freebsd/ncvs/CVSROOT/val-tags: Permission denied

With just no write access but still read access:

    $ cvs -R -d opensource:/home/freebsd/ncvs co -rRELENG_4_3_0_RELEASE src/UPDATING
    cvs [server aborted]: cannot write /home/freebsd/ncvs/CVSROOT/val-tags: Permission denied
