Hi, i have recently been searching for an opensource alternative to windows
as i have loaded Redhat 7.1 onto the secondary computer in my home and am
amazed at the stability and capabilities of it.. Now in the past 6 months i
have purchased an Abit KT7A RAID motherboard and have put the onboard HPT370
RAID controller to use on my two 20GB hard drives, running them in RAID 0
mode..
My big question regards wether freeBSD 4.2 will support the HPT370 RAID
controller in RAID 0 mode nativly??

it says on the highpoint-tech.com website that "FreeBSD Operating System
Includes Support for HPT370 Controllers Versions 4.1 and Later"
now i checked freeBSD.org to see if the HPT370 RAID controller is fully
supported, but didn't find anything that fully ansewered my questions.

"The ata(4) driver now has support for tagged queueing, which is
enabled by the ATA_ENABLE_TAGS option. It also supports the
ServerWorks ROSB4 ATA33 chipset, the CMD 648 ATA66 and CMD 649 ATA100
chipsets, and the Cyrix 5530. It also has support for ATA "pseudo"
RAID controllers, including the Promise Fasttrak and HighPoint HPT370
controllers."

This tells me that the 4.2 release of freeBSD supports the HPT370 RAID
controller on my Abit KT7A motherboard. but not if it does so in RAID mode
or simply in IDE mode like the linux kernel patch at
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/ide.2.2.16.20000630.patch.bz2

I do not want to dismantle the RAID as i have become accustomed to the very
fast speeds of RAID. But neither do i really want to stay with windows as
it is becomming apparent that in many ways it is an inferior OS.

Thank you for your help, i really appreciate anything you give me.

God Bless <><
