tar into a tgz file and ftp it to the Mac manually.

You might also look at the extended options such as --newer-mtime. Get
ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/gnu/usr.bin/tar/tar.1
which has better documentation than the released tar.1
