Yea, startx worked, and I don't remember now for sure but it seems like there was some complaining abou xauth or something in .xsession-errors. I didn't see the connection, though, so I ignored it...sigh, maybe the wrong thing to do. At any rate, I've pulled 'XSERVER' out of my kernel. Everything still works, so this wasn't the answer. But it's working for now, I wonder if I can cause this to happen again when I add another user. I've got one more of these Thinkpads to build, by the time I'm done I should have a pretty good start on a FAQ. Regards, Brian
