I cvsup'd new source and followed these instructions from UPDATING: [7] make buildworld [9] make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE [8] cp src/sys/${MACHINE}/conf/GENERIC.hints /boot/device.hints [2] make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE cd src/sys/boot ; make install [6] [1] [3] mergemaster -p [5] rm -rf /usr/include/g++ make installworld Here I ran into trouble. The installworld informed me that my kernel wasn't new enough. I'm sorry I don't have the exact error. I was unable to complete the installworld and unable to recover. I decided to do a fresh install. I made 5.0 boot floppies. kern.flp loaded with no problems. I inserted mfsroot.flp and it appears to load ok until: unknown can't assign resources (irq) unknown can't assign resources (port) unknown can't assign resources (port) unknown can't assign resources (port) Timecouters tick every 10.000 msec Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode fault virtual address = 0xc703a000 fault code = supervisor read, page not present instruction pointer = 0x8:0xc01c669f stack pointer = 0x10:0xc6d3a9c0 frame pointer = 0x10:0xc6d3ac04 code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b = DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1 processor eflags = interupt enabled, resume, IOPL=0 current process = 6 (cbb0) trap number = 12 panic: page fault syncing disks, buffers remaining... done uptime: 1s Automatic reboot in 15 seconds I've installed a new 4.7 release using the 4.7 kern.flp and mfsroot.flp and booted from the generic kernel.
