Netgear changed chips between these two revs. The Rev C series used a real Dec21x4x chip, and needs the DEC/tulip driver. The Rev D series switched to the PNIC tulip-clone chip, and needs a driver that works with the PNIC chip. Actually, "clone" isn't right, "compatible" is better, as evidenced by needing a driver update to work.
