I think this thread doesn't belong on -questions (try -chat next time), but I see little harm in extending OT threads. The "pdksh" shell (and others, IIRC) has a nice ctrl-r gizmo which lets you do an incremental search on previous commands for a string whether it begins the command or not. Very helpful. You can also save a reach for the arrows by using ctrl-p and ctrl-n in pdksh and some other shells.
