be sure you're not accidentally running nfs v3 to the irix 5.2 server. 
irix 5.3 has a bug here that we found: it doesn't properly return an 
error when NFS clients try to do nfs v3, and the v2 and v3 ops are 
similar enough that things will almost work (It should return the version 
number error, but does not). I'm willing to assume that 5.2 has the same 
bug ...
