I've noticed that timed-out ssh sessions hang in there and if left unaddressed can actually render your system unreachable via ssh until it has been rebooted; a real pain when you and the target system are a few thousand miles apart. (-: I frequently install a script that forcibly disconnects everyone whom has not touched their ssh connection for N days, to preserve these valuable resources against the forces of laziness and carelessness.
