If the stars are used, they have to be protected from shell expansion: find /usr/ports -name "*freetype*" But usually ports can be found quickly with whereis: % whereis freetype freetype: /usr/ports/print/freetype If you don't know the exact name used, there are search options like Polytropon showed, or the freshports.org website can be handy.
