Does kppp keep a log somewhere? You have sio0 and sio1 so you should also have a /dev/ttyd0 & ttyd1 for those. Check your /etc/ttys to see if the ttyd0 is being used by something else. I guess we need more information - have you checked the /var/log/messages?
