Is this one of those cases that will give pre-4.9 make(1) a problem?
(At this hour, I can't think.)

Also, I thought we were going to go ahead and do a placeholder definition
of gcc-4.0 like we currently have for 3.4.  Not that that should hold up
anything right now.
