Mark, Excellent diagnostic approach WRT virtual terminals. The place to start your digging is clearly marked: /etc/pccard_ether: not found /etc/pccard_ether is a shellscript (`file /etc/pccard_ether` to see what I mean). This means that it can be read, perhaps modified (`more /etc/pccard_ether` to see what I mean). I'd try something like sh -v /etc/pccard_ether xe0 [... other args as appropriate] ... and see where it wedges.
