Is there some way to take advantage of the virtual categories ... the
idea is that I want to install the new perl port, then fetch and build
all the different perl code ports, without having to search through all
the various directories where they exist.

I'd like to be able to issue some command from /usr/ports, like maybe
"make <virtual category>" and build all those.
