This was resolved by doing killall -HUP syslogd Then, as the FAQ says, adding tcp/ip to the log stuff revealed the problem was smb name lookups by Samba addressed to 127.0.0.1 on udp 137 and 139. The problem remains to check whether port locking is working correctly.
