Just being anal: for best heat conductivity, you want to spread a thin layer on *BOTH* the CPU and heat sink. Spreading a thin layer on just one is often enough, but placing a layer on both virtually guarantees the best heat conductivity. [ As Kevin said: you want a thin layer -- just enough to coat both sides.
