Traditionally, certain groups have been reserved for the TTY layer, but unless you are trying to coexist with these sorts of interfaces, it really doesn't matter much. I would avoid the 'f' group, however, because those IOCTLs need to work on all file descriptors and you wouldn't want a collision.
