Can you count them before you need them? I don't think you can use malloc, but you should be able to allocate pages, as long as you do it in both address spaces. That's just my guess, though: see below. Unfortunately, the ideal approach would probably be to overallocate by a huge amount, and discard the pages later. Unfortunately, this is not possible in the current VM (kernel page discarding). The person to ask to find out about malloc() in init386 for sure would probably be Bruce, or maybe John.
