Well, a couple of points. First, you do not mention what version of FreeBSD you are running. Neither 4.5-RELEASE, 4.5-STABLE or 5.0-CURRENT as of today seem to support such a thing as WMFS or Elephant (it is not mentioned in the sys/i386/conf/LINT file, or sys/i386/conf/NOTES on -CURRENT, which lists all the available kernel options). I could not find it in the CVS archives for either of those files, either; are you sure that FreeBSD has actually had support for this, ever? Also, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org is not exactly the best list to ask this type of questions; it is more of a list for discussing the documentation that comes with FreeBSD. There is another list, freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.org, which is dedicated to general questions and problems with FreeBSD. Ah.. I just did a Google search for 'Elephant FreeBSD'; it came up with a paper by Dr. Michael J. Feeley, mentioning an implementation of Elephant for FreeBSD 2.2.7. When I checked Dr. Feeley's home page at http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~feeley/ and followed the Research -> Elephant links, the following paragraph caught my eye: The current Elephant prototype is implemented as a Virtual File System in the FreeBSD kernel. It is available upon request. So, the Elephant filesystem is not yet a part of FreeBSD per se; you could try contacting Dr. Michael J. Feeley for the prototype.
