He has been working on IBM platform certification for use with FreeBSD. Not that this does any good, advocacy-wise, without a culturally neutral logo for IBM to put on the boxes, mind you. He should be willing to release his current list of models for which he has determined that FreeBSD has drivers for all the hardware that comes with the stock unit, given a bit of prodding, and you can clean it up for the FreeBSD.org hardware compatability page. Alternately, you could go to the hardware compatability page linked off of freebsd.org, and see if your hardware is already listed there, which it might very well be.
