Someone from the freebsd-core can help us on this topic? Start from 3.0. Main reasons being, ELF, CAM and the alpha port. You'll suffer from the fact that 3.0 is still stabilising but 2.2.7 will have become old technology by the time you get anywhere with a sparc port and there'll be a considerable porting effort moving from a 2.2.7 code base to the 3.0 branches.
