If the motd file were _carefully_ crafted, the administrator would know
how the sed command in rc.local worked and take it into account.

It doesn't really matter if it's taken out or not. If I want it in my
_LOCAL_ rc.local, I'll put it back in.

What I'd like to bring attention to is fixing that which in fact isn't
broken. Is there not enough work to be done fixing that which is broken?

Hrrumph. Curmudgeon mode now dribbling back to normal grumpy mode and
back in the corner...
