The new version is called "ntp" because Dave Mills decided it was time to get rid of the 'x'. I never understood why the "x" was there in the first place. The latest ntp4 code is *not* export restricted. It only uses md5. If the new version is put into contrib in the same way I ported am-utils to contrib, then keeping the ntp code up-to-date will be trivial. I gather several folks are helping collaborate on the new PPS api, which will also be helpful/useful.
