I believe the X radeon driver relies on parsing some information out of 
the BIOS. Since the Mac version doesn't have a BIOS in the format the 
driver expects, it does not work. There was only the one model of card 
and so no one was ever interested in fixing it.

You can get X with the xf86-video-scfb driver, but it will be unaccelerated.
