I agree. And instead of using:
# kill `head -1 /var/run/sendmail.pid`
you could do:
# ps -aux | grep sendmail
# kill -1 <sendmail pid>
The kill -1 sends a SIGHUP which bounces (stops and restarts)
sendmail.
