What is unfortunate is not the name of the variable per se, but the fact that with the introduction of 8.12, the name has become out of synch with the functionality. There could be a number of solutions: 1. renaming sendmail_enable to sendmail_inbound_enable, and deprecate the use of sendmail_enable altogether; 2. renaming sendmail_enable to sendmail_inbound_enable, and changing the meaning of sendmail_enable=NO to 'do not launch any Sendmail process'. 1. requires you to update uyour config if you are using sendmail_enable=YES. Probably impacts a significant fraction of the user base. 2. requires you to update your configuration only if you are using sendmail_enable=NO *but* need Sendmail to send mail out anyway. I guess it should impact far less users than 1. Not changing anything requires anyone not using Sendmail as his MTA to learn about Sendmail 8.12 internals in order to disable it completely.
