These messages are coming from the tape unit which you didn't
mention.  It looks as if you're trying to append, which doesn't work
well with streamers.  What are you using to write to tape (what
program, what options)?

Also, what do you mean by "lock up".  Is the only solution the Big Red
Button?  Do characters echo when you type?
