Given that I have a debugging kernel in place and lots of traceback info, this is an opportunity for a softupdate bug to be found and fixed. However, this is a production machine and I can't afford to have it crash too often. So, if it appears that this PR is not being worked on, I will disable softupdates on the machine to avoid the crashes.
