I have been trying to get my sound system working with FreeBSD.

I built the kernel with pcm and pnp

cat >/dev/audio ring.au

seems to work fine - ie it plays a tune.

cat >t.au </dev/audio creates a file t.au with nothing but nulls. The
size of this file is proportional to the time I permit the command to
continue until I terminate it with ^C

Invoking mixer seems to indicate everything as one would expect. All
values are set bettween 75:75 to 100:100.
mixer recsrc return microphone.

I have tested the microphone/headset on my windows NT machine using sound
recorder. Seems to work fine.

I am running a Cyrx Media GX using integrated SB compatible sound.

When I listen to a file on my Windows/NT machine it is clear as a bell.
When I listen to the same file on my FreeBSD maching there is a very
noticable white background noise.

Anybody want to suggest something here?

Robert Ramey
