I reinstalled the driver but this time from ports. This fixed the GLX problem but brought up the new error: agp.ko detected, aborting setup of nvagp Luckily, this was documented and it was a simple matter of recompiling the kernel without agp. I'm now sitting here with an up-to-date box, xscreensaver and a lot of smoothly bouncing cows.
