You could try the mutt-devel port (currently at version 1.5.1_1). To avoid the dependencies needed to build the documentation define WITHOUT_MUTT_SGMLFORMAT during the build process. Don't worry about the -devel name tag on the port. I've been using this branch for some time now without any problems.
