Personally I prefer downloading full tree and then adding to 
/usr/local/etc/ports.conf something like:

	lang/gcc46: IGNORE=lang/gcc should be used instead

or

	net-p2p/*: IGNORE=server doesn't need this

It's ports-mgmt/portconf configuration file.
