Or is it loader.conf on the release ISO that is different. Doesn't a lack of APIC preclude running SMP? Can you suggest next steps for me, please? Can you try just booting ACPI with APIC disabled=20 (hint.apic.0.disabled=3D1) to see if that fares better?
