Nicolas,

Thank you for your suggestion that I use "fbsdboot.exe" from DOS.  Once 
FreeBSD has booted, I can access all areas of my 1GB drive.  I left the 
Promise BIOS operational since my motherboard's BIOS does not support drives 
of this size.

The Promise BIOS is buggy. Either disable it with jumpers (you'll have 
some problems with your 1Gb disk if your motherboard's BIOS do not 
support it) or use fbsdboot.exe from DOS. This exec is in 
/sys/i386/boot/dosboot.
